Blackmagic Design announces Pyxis modular full-frame video camera: Digital Photography Review

That’s a very usable range of top-notch lenses at an affordable price point. Using the same lens on both cameras you can see how both cameras handle the shot. The extra field of view with wide angle lenses is a huge advantage for the 6K FF. And don't forget that while PL and EF are pretty much industry standards, RF, E, and Z mount licenses are probably available only to lens and accessory developers, not to camera makers. L is the only FF MILC mount available to third party camera makers, and considering its specs, L cameras may have an EF adapter as good as RF ones. The viewfinder on a live view "stills" camera is essentially a TV monitor, so ...

Automatically populated lens data from electronic L-Mount lenses. Automatic recording of camera settings, motion sensor data plus slate data such as project, scene number, take and special notes. A 3D LUT can also be embedded in metadata of Blackmagic RAW files. This price point gives you access to some of the most all-round capable cameras available. Excellent image quality, powerful autofocus and great looking video are the least you can expect.

While the camera isn’t really designed for photography, it’s a handy way to grab a pic to show clients, producers, or directors who might want to see your framing. The new model feels just as comfortable to use as Blackmagic's other cinema cameras. It might be a little bulky, but its chassis feels excellent whether you're holding it with one or two hands. The autofocus is impeccable; there's still no autofocus tracking nor in-body image stabilization (IBIS), but with the handy focus button next to the left thumb, I find it easy to land the focus directly on my subject. The whole thing can be heavy, especially if you use it with Blackmagic's optional battery grip, but this is still my favorite design for everything from the studio to run-and-gun shoots. Blackmagic Cinema Camera records in Blackmagic RAW to preserve control of detail, exposure and color during post production.

Power from Batteries, 12V DC and Recharge via USB‑C!

The only major lens mount that’s too short to be adapted here is the Micro Four Thirds system, which happens to be the mount used on Blackmagic’s older Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. If you have lenses from an MFT camera, you might want to think carefully about upgrading. The full-frame camera can capture considerably more light and get more vivid colors without having to crank the ISO level up. I also found it easier to coax a better image out of the full-frame camera using DaVinci Resolve, which brings me to one of the other big advantages of using this workflow. ProRes at 4096 x 2160, 3840 x 2160 and 1920 x 1080 with film, extended video or video dynamic range or custom 3D LUT. John Brawley talks about the new Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K.

If you plan to shoot in RAW, the data rate can be up to 272 megabytes per second. That’s some serious data creation, working out to over 16 gigabytes per minute. At that data rate, a 64GB card will capture just 4 minutes of video.

These systems require tight integration with the hardware. And “just software” doesn’t mean it doesn’t take years to develop. I think BM would struggle to compete at least today in the autofocus world that is stills photography today. Most of all smartphones have advanced, very advanced, technologies that are not yet implemented and available in photographic big boys cameras.

That isn’t so bad by itself — the camera uses widely available Canon LP-E6 batteries — but the camera will also shut down without warning if the battery gets too low. This is not a perfect camera and has some faults that will keep it out of the hands of certain users, but no other manufacturer can do what Blackmagic Design is doing. If you have even a passing interest in high-level video production, this camera should be on your shortlist — it’s not the best tool for every job, but nothing else brings this much value to the table.

Or customers can attach the included SSD plate which offers a convenient location to securely attach a USB-C drive for recording or even a mobile phone for live streaming. Unfortunately, it’s not quite right for one-person crews like YouTubers and vloggers (and Digital Trends camera reviewers) who depend on reliable continuous autofocus and can’t monitor battery life like a hawk. However, it is otherwise such a refreshing camera to use and produces such great results that it may well be worth the minor headaches. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is a revolutionary product, one that has again lowered the bar for entry into professional video production. It will find a warm welcome in independent productions, student films, and documentaries. Some potential customers will also point to the lack of in-body image stabilization as a negative, but Blackmagic Design’s hands were probably tied.

It'd cost less to develop, but they would also sell far less due to the demand for hybrid bodies. However, there are some interesting advancements from DJI, with their laser focusing attachment (introduced as an accessory for the RS2 and RSC2). You can use focus tracking for fast moving subjects that is far better than what most focus pullers can do. Eye focus AF also beats manual focus when the interviewee's head is moving.

I’m also short, so being able to hold the camera up over my head and still see what I’m shooting is nice. However, the monitor doesn’t flip out to the side or rotate 180 degrees, which means vloggers and YouTubers might have trouble using this camera without attaching an external monitor to the HDMI output. The Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro features an active Canon EF lens mount that’s compatible with photography and cinema lenses from a variety of manufacturers. I like to shoot handheld with an image-stabilized Canon f/2.8 zoom and, for interviews, I often rely on Sigma’s ART series of fast primes—all of which mount beautifully to the Blackmagic. That said, upgrading from the older 6K isn’t necessarily a good idea. The sensor and image quality are exactly the same, so unless you really want those extra features it’s probably not worth the extra outlay.

I watched Strada CEO and founder of Strada, Michael Cioni, demonstrate the software’s revolutionary toolset. If you need to know anything about Michael, it's that he knows his stuff. He's brilliant and charming, offering an answer to any question and ensuring it’s a good one.

Just discussing the power of product names, I actually do like the M4/3 system. Panasonic make great product, but for video the BMD stuff is orders of magnitude more intense. The Blackmagic is in a completely different league. It's outputting quality on another level, then there's the software which is free and arguably the very best there is, Panasonic doesn't even compete in that area. No more sending the camera in for an external modification or spending nerve-racking hours like my colleague Gunther, trying to do it all by himself. For many if not all, this additional LCD functionality is much of a welcomed thing. Recording 4K or lower in ProRes gives edit-ready files that are easier to handle, and usually save on space compared to Raw.

Nevertheless, given its shockingly low price for the bevy of professional cinema features you get, budget and indie filmmakers should give it a serious look. Advanced digital film camera with massive full frame 24x36mm 6K sensor, wide dynamic range, flexible L-Mount and optical low pass filter. Records Blackmagic RAW with proxies to CFexpress media. For recording audio, the camera has both a 3.5mm and mini XLR audio inputs in addition to stereo microphones on the front of the camera. Audio quality from an external microphone is very good, evidence of professional quality preamps.

Since the cameras are the same price it is a very direct comparison many will make. If you already have a 6K Pro you shouldn’t be running out the door, but for your first or next camera it is worth considering going full-frame. The 6K full-frame appears to be a bit sharper, too. There is some rolling shutter, but it is manageable depending on what you are shooting.
